Paint is the most visible finish in a house, and the one most affected by prep.
A good result starts by looking at the surfaces honestly: what needs patching, sanding, or priming, where old finishes need to be dealt with, and how a new color will sit against the flooring, trim, cabinetry, and the light in each room.
Interior walls, exterior surfaces, and cabinetry each ask for a slightly different approach, so the plan is built around what is actually being painted, not a one-size answer.
Most of the job is preparation.
The best paint work happens before any color goes on the wall.
- Surfaces cleaned, patched, and repaired so flaws do not telegraph through the finish
- Sanding and priming where the surface calls for it, including stain blocking when needed
- Careful protection of floors, fixtures, and anything that is not being painted
- The right sheen for the surface, whether it is a wall, trim, or cabinetry
- Clean cut lines, even coverage, and a genuine cleanup at the end
Color is a design decision.
The right color depends on contrast, undertone, and how it behaves in a room’s natural and artificial light through the day, and on how it relates to the floor, trim, and any cabinetry beside it. A color that looks perfect on a chip can read completely differently across four walls.
A note on older homes: surfaces painted before 1978 may contain lead-based paint and can call for lead-safe practices. It helps to flag the age of your home early so the work is approached appropriately.
